The Metropolitan Museum of Art has revealed that the 2026 Met Gala theme will center on 'The Gilded Age: American Fashion and Excess,' exploring the extravagant fashion of the late 19th century and its modern parallels. The accompanying exhibition will feature over 200 pieces spanning 1870 to 1900, including garments never before publicly displayed.

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour described the theme as both a celebration and critique of American opulence, encouraging attendees to interpret the era's aesthetics through a contemporary lens. Co-chairs for the event include Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, and fashion designer Christopher John Rogers.

Designers are already offering previews of their Gilded Age interpretations, with dramatic corsetry, ornate beading, and rich jewel tones dominating the early speculation about what promises to be one of the most visually striking galas in recent memory.
